Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated Flávio Bolsonaro on Sunday to win a fourth term as president of Brazil. The result ends the campaign that saw the incumbent fight back against a far-right challenger who is the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Lula has held the office for a total of 16 years across three terms.

Flávio Bolsonaro has refused to concede defeat. He asked for the election results to be annulled. The challenger cited a decision by a supreme court justice to extend voting hours as the primary reason for the dispute. This mirrors the behavior of his father, who also refused to acknowledge his loss to Lula four years ago before attempting a coup and being convicted for it.

Tom Phillips, reporting from São Paulo, stated that the Bolsonaro response matches his fears. He added that he does not think the dispute will change the outcome. Phillips noted that world leaders are already recognizing Lula’s win. He said Flávio Bolsonaro does not have a hope of overturning the result.

Phillips described the victory as the peak of Lula’s 50-year political career. The president was the first elected working-class leader in Brazil. Phillips noted that Lula has helped millions of people escape poverty. The politician’s career has been described as incredible and sometimes controversial.

Jair Bolsonaro, the former president, was convicted of attempting a coup after refusing to accept his defeat in 2022. His son Flávio is now following the same path. The junior Bolsonaro’s legal challenge centers on the timing of the vote rather than the count itself. The supreme court justice who extended the voting hours is central to this argument.

Lula’s victory secures his position in the presidency for the next four years. The election took place in a climate of intense rivalry between the two families. The outcome is expected to be recognized by international partners. The legal battle in Brazil will now test the courts’ willingness to uphold the extended voting schedule.
