Miami remains the top-ranked team in ESPN's post-Week 8 power rankings after a 52-23 win over Pitt, with wide receiver Malachi Toney setting a school record with 16 catches for 194 yards. The Hurricanes' defense allowed 334 passing yards to Pitt, and quarterback Darian Mensah took three sacks.
Ohio State dropped to No. 3 as quarterback Julian Sayin recovers from an elbow injury sustained before the bye week. Freshman Luke Fahey, listed at 5-foot-11, is in line to play after winning the backup job over 6-foot-4 Tavien St. Clair during the preseason. The Buckeyes visit USC on Saturday.
Georgia fell to No. 4 following a 27-24 home loss to Auburn on Oct. 17, a game in which the Bulldogs rushed for 113 yards on 28 attempts. Nate Fuzzer returned from a rib injury that sidelined him for most of two games, while backup Chauncey Bowens missed his second straight contest with a lower-body injury. Georgia plays Florida in Atlanta on Saturday.
BYU slipped from No. 2 to No. 4 after losing in double overtime at UCF. The Cougars averaged 3.2 yards per carry without injured running back LJ Martin, and quarterback Bear Bachmeier completed 16 of 32 passes. ESPN Research counted 11 losses by top-10 teams over three weeks, matching a record last set in 2007.
Indiana moved up to No. 7 after a 13-6 overtime win at Michigan. The Hoosiers held the Wolverines to 54 rushing yards on 39 carries, and Michigan had not lost an AP top-10 game when allowing 13 or fewer points since 1985. Kentucky climbed to No. 8 after a 34-17 win over Vanderbilt.
Utah sits at No. 9 with a 7-0 record and a 21-13 comeback win over Houston. Alabama reached the bye week at 6-2 after beating Texas A&M, with the Crimson Tide rushing for 68 yards on 28 carries while missing four starters. LSU rose to No. 12 after outscoring Mississippi State and Auburn 69-17 combined, including a 385-yard, three-touchdown passing day from Sam Leavitt against Auburn.
Texas climbed to No. 13 after building a 24-3 halftime lead and holding off Ole Miss. Arch Manning threw three turnovers, including a strip sack returned for a touchdown, and the Longhorns were penalized 14 times for 134 yards. Ole Miss dropped to No. 14.
