Mike Boynton has signed a two-year contract to serve as the head coach of the University of Michigan men's basketball team. He replaces Dusty May, who left the program following the 2025 national championship season to accept a head coaching position with the Dallas Mavericks. The Wolverines will begin their title defense under Boynton's leadership this season.
Boynton joins the program after spending the previous two years as an assistant coach on May's staff. Before that, he served as the head coach at Oklahoma State for seven seasons. During his tenure in Stillwater, his teams compiled an overall record of 119 wins and 109 losses. They advanced to the NCAA Tournament once. Boynton was dismissed after the 2023-24 season concluded with a 12-20 mark.
During Big Ten media days, Boynton described his time working alongside May as a period of focused learning. "The last two years have been sort of like a sabbatical for me," he said. He added that he learned how to manage a high-functioning organization while sitting next to May every day. He noted that he gained insight into identifying player strengths and delegating responsibilities effectively.
Boynton's hiring is part of a larger series of coaching changes across college basketball this fall. Casey Alexander has taken over at Kansas State. He previously coached at Stetson, Lipscomb, and Belmont, holding a career record of 303-180. He replaces Jerome Tang, who was fired after his record fell to 45-47 over three seasons following a strong first year at the school.
Will Wade has returned to Louisiana State University for a second stint as head coach. He had previously been let go in 2022 following a ruling on recruiting violations. His interim replacement, Matt McMahon, was dismissed after four seasons with a 60-70 record. Wade holds a 105-51 record from his first tenure at LSU, which included three NCAA Tournament bids.
North Carolina hired Michael Malone to replace Hubert Davis. Malone had no prior connection to the Tar Heels and no college head coaching experience. He spent 2013 through 2025 as an NBA coach, accumulating a 510-394 record. He won a league title with the Denver Nuggets in 2023. Davis had led North Carolina to the 2022 national championship game.
On the women's side, Pauline Love has returned to Alabama as head coach. She previously served as an assistant there under Kristy Curry. Curry left for South Florida after 13 seasons with a 245-173 record. Love spent the 2025-26 season as an assistant at Oklahoma.
